Data Privacy When You Add AI to Your App.

Jul 22, 2026 · 5 min read · by Abigail Castellon

The moment you add AI to your product, you are usually sending data somewhere to be processed. For any business handling customer information, that raises real questions. Here is what to understand before you build.

Know where your data goes

Most AI features send text or files to a model provider. The first thing to establish is exactly what data leaves your system, where it goes, and what the provider does with it. Reputable providers offer clear terms — including options where your data is not used to train their models. Read them.

Send only what is needed

A well-built AI feature does not fling your whole database at a model. It sends the minimum required for the task and strips out sensitive details that are not needed. Less data shared is less risk, always.

Compliance is not optional

If you handle health, financial, or personal data, regulations like GDPR and others set real rules about how it can be processed. AI does not get an exemption. Building with those rules in mind from the start is far cheaper than retrofitting them after a problem.

Be honest with your users

If AI touches customer data, your privacy policy should say so plainly. Trust is easy to lose and hard to rebuild, and transparency is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

I build AI features with privacy designed in from the first line — because doing it right is a lot cheaper than doing it twice. That is the AbbaCodabra way.
