Why Hire an Independent Developer? Save Time, Money & Headaches.

Jul 22, 2026 · 5 min read · by Abigail Castellon

When you need software built, the default advice is "hire an agency." But for most startups and small businesses, working directly with one senior independent developer is faster, cheaper, and far less stressful. Here's why.

You talk to the person actually building it

At an agency, your idea passes through a salesperson, an account manager, and a project lead before it reaches a developer — and every handoff loses detail. With an independent developer, the person you brief is the person writing the code. Nothing gets lost in translation, decisions happen in minutes instead of meetings, and when you have a question you get a real answer, not a status update.

You save money without cutting corners

Agency rates cover a lot of things that aren't your software: office space, sales teams, layers of management, and a healthy markup on the developer who's actually doing the work. An independent developer carries almost none of that overhead, so more of your budget goes into the product itself. Same quality of code, a fraction of the invoice.

You move faster

Small teams have a superpower: there's no bureaucracy between an idea and a shipped feature. No sprint-planning theater, no waiting for three departments to sign off. One person who understands the whole system can make a change and have it live the same day. For an early-stage product, that speed is often the difference between momentum and stalling.

You own everything

Good independent developers hand over clean, documented code in your repository, on your accounts. No lock-in, no "our proprietary platform," no hostage situation if you ever want to bring things in-house or work with someone else. It's your product — you should hold every key to it.

When an agency does make sense

To be fair: if you need a large team working in parallel across design, marketing, and engineering all at once, an agency's scale can help. But most projects don't start there. They start with one clear problem that one experienced developer can solve well — and grow from a solid, well-built foundation.

That's exactly what I do at AbbaCodabra: one senior developer, start to ship, with clear communication and code you fully own.
